Do Bad Games Really Exist?

July 27, 2006

If I wrote a book about Video gaming and its history, I would most definitely have to be called “A Brief History of Time(played)” … Clever puns aside I would barely be able to scrape up a chapter anyway so here I bring you some of my Gaming highlights.

Some of my earliest and fondest memories of video gaming include such legends as Worms and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, oh yes that is not a typo. Games back then were much simpler as plot seemed to be a pretty tertiary point to them, unless based on a specific topic they generally never bothered making up reasons for you to be throwing sheep and one another or hilariously dancing criminals to death so you can rescue (and date?) the children you find. Needless to say, gaming was Good because things were so simple it was hard to make something that did not meet our expectations, unlike now … my expectations are like an Olympic Pole-vault set-up, without the pole.

I guess my expectations are really this high because of several things, first the earliest reason is Microprose, the legendary Microprose, who gave to me turn based strategy (not that Sid Meier rubbish) and simulation games – Think Transport Tycoon, which I still play – Microprose taught me that you needn’t be given plot and that simple is always the most effective. To my memory some of the best Microprose Games were ‘Master of Magic’ – Arguably my favourite game ever – ‘Colonization’, ‘X-com – UFO Enemy Unknown’, ‘Transport Tycoon (+Deluxe)’ and ‘Masters of Orion 1/2′. Truly a titan of classic gaming, its dissolution remains a scar on the industry.

The next is another company that requires far less explanation, the awesome Blizzard Entertainment, producers of legendary RPGs and RTSs for the best part of my gaming time, they concurrently push up the bar which (in my humble opinion) keeps the genres alive. Arguably there has not been a better Fantasy RTS than Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne since it’s release although some would claim Battle for Middle Earth 2 came close, not in my books.

Last on my list, but certainly not the least is a company which repeatedly redefines the FPS category with every release. It is a particularly tough market with some of the biggest titles vying for power, but this company seems to top the list every time, guessed it? But of course you have, Valve the creator of the Half-Life series is possibly the single best creator of FPSs in History.

In a market like this, with such strong foundations, it’s no surprise we pick up video games and simply can not play them because of some fatal flaw. Games that otherwise aren’t terrible are relieved of their entertaining duty and discarded into the pile of cases that every gamer has. Staring at mine Act of War is a perfect example of a game with Potential and the budget to make it big, but instead it’s a pretty poor and dated game. For shame Atari.

Well that’s enough of my ranting for today; I’ll be back with more soon so you just keep on reading.

Left the Lore in the Wash… Damn

It’s time to face the facts… this is not a joke. This is not Blizzard doing another April Fools, because it isn’t April and it isn’t actually funny. Paladin and Shaman will now be available to both factions, not because it makes sense but because Blizzard are too lazy to try and fix the problems with their game in an intelligent way. Instead they’ve merely removed the unique part of each faction and made the game rather faceless and boring. I was already miserable as the game felt like a bunch of numbers. Now I realise it’s a bunch of numbers with malice, and therefore I can feel myself becoming bored and uninspired within five minutes of booting up the game. And I haven’t even reached level 60. Finally, a Blizzard game that I’ve become unhappy with.

It’s the nail in the coffin for me. I just hope the next expansion pack has Arthas in it… it simply wouldn’t be funny if the pack sent players to the bottom of the ocean to fight naga. I’m sure many would be a little confused by the implementation of submarines. Although, if we can have spaceships… wait, that was a stupid idea too.

I really hope I get into the Pirates of the Burning Sea beta.

Maybe I could never be satisfied with WoW until there’s an official pirate class.

In other news, I still don’t have a 360. Curse my lack of Dead or Alive 4.

No ytmnd links… they have a search function for a reason.

Mark out.

The Man of Steel

July 25, 2006

So as you probably gathered I have been to see the new Superman Movie aptly entitled Superman Returns because yes, he does in fact return. Technicalities aside the movie was an entertaining watch and I am pleased to say that I believe Superman Fans and Comic-Movie-Conversion fans will all be pleasantly surprised with it.

It did after all answer the age old question of “I wonder if his eyes are bullet proof” … why yes my Friend, yes they are.

Anyway, I will not ruin it for you, I do recommend it, Kevin Spacey makes an awesome villain no matter the movie and I was quite impressed by the job the new superman does.

It gets 7 Snazzy Hats out of a possible 10. Good Going. Oh and, DC comics suck.

At present Mark is bombarding me with Ytmnd’s across the new Messenger Live (which has decided to start working) largely concerning Ebaum. Well, my stance is, Ebaum who? I have accidentally boycotted it by never actually feeling the need to visit his site, it sucks after all.
I’ll share these non-Ebaum related ones with you, Mark will likely post more when he comes to write an entry.

And I hate the Pally/Shaman switch over, Phails/10.

Enjoy.

Reporting In.

Welcome aboard to the Modern Gamers Blog spot! Previously a fully fledged website, technical difficulties and caffeine supply shortage led to the quick and painless death of that venture.

This Blog will be posted upon by me, JamesR and my good gaming friend Mark, this is just a brief entry post to start the ball rolling.

You’ll hear from us soon.
